Branding, logo and packaging

CLIENT: Alps Puritea

BRIEF: Logo and Front/Back packaging design

The owner of a wellness company in London tasked me with creating a logo and packaging design for a new sister brand.

Among the design considerations were tying in the design to the existing aesthetic of the preexisting company and alluding to an 'old apothecary' vibe. The resulting work was bright and fresh, with an added charm of handmade art nouveau motifs.

CLIENT: London-based band, “The Ancient Unknown”

BRIEF: Cover art for their record release, “Cyclones”

In keeping with the song's hard hitting, dark and chaotic vibe, I wanted this artwork to leave an ominous feeling, while paying homage to the band's psychedelic roots.

The centred art features a cyclonic spiral with multiple 'eyes', inducing a feeling of drawing the viewer inwards. The eyes hint at archetypes of chaos having a wider, collective intelligence of their own, in which we are unwittingly swept along.

The custom font further pays homage to the hard-hitting, riff driven music frequent in the band's soundscape and likewise 70's Psychedelic Rock.

To increase the scope of the work, and include the warmth and positive undertones of the band, I coloured the piece with warm purples and turquoises that respond to UV lighting. This gives the band further scope with the design to include incorporate UV effects into their merchandise and set design.

"Having seen Jake's tattoo work and woodwork, we [The Ancient Unknown] thought that his style would fit well with one of our more psychedelic tracks. We asked him to fashion up whatever came to his head after listening to our track.

We were absolutely blown away with his work, not to mention his thoughtful approach tin making the design in colours that would light up in UV light - making it a great design for merch at gigs.

Really looking forward to working with him again on future releases, and I would highly recommend."

CLIENT: Tokyo-based sake blog, “The Drunken Deer”

BRIEF: Logo for their sake-themed blog

The owner of this Sake-themed blog wanted a logo making to mascot their content.

One design consideration for this work included referencing the deer of Nara, Japan, of which the title of the blog alludes to. The semi-wild deer that roam the city are thought to be sacred messengers of the gods and are associated with the national spirit of Japan, Sake.

The deer outline was based on a historic art relic of a carved Nara deer, and wears a jovial feeling, as if wonderfully tipsy on sake.

To further link the deer to the theme of the blog - an exploration into sake tasting - I created a "double vision" effect, common in drunkenness, and used a shade of green and red common in traditional Sake packaging.

The subtle design sensibilities and nuances incorporated into this design proved a hit on the owner's Instagram, generating substantially more engagement (8x) than their average post.

"A really well-made design that had quality throughout. Jacob perfectly understood the brief and designed a logo that was both unique and incredibly meaningful."

- Manuel Padovan, "The Drunken Deer"

CLIENT: Vienna-based Tattoo artist

BRIEF: Add flair to personal website

Working with an already-captivating piece of art work from the client, I added some extra flair by fading in and out the stars in the background.

This added just enough extra interactivity without detracting from the original piece.

Complimentary colours were chosen for the border and logo.

The animated gif was used on the contact page of her website as well as working well across social media channels.

Complete Website

CLIENT: Vienna-based Tattoo artist

BRIEF: Build a complete website including content strategy and personalised branding

Requiring a website to showcase her work at an upcoming exhibition, my client tasked me with putting together something that would translate her message as an artist and tattooist.

I provided a complete service, from setting up a fast, lean and easy-to-use site, to creating a strategy and content to present her work in an engaging and relevant way.

The website was carefully designed across desktop, tablet and mobile, and branded to fit the overall feel and aesthetics of the art it represents.

I couldn’t think of a better person to build my personal and studio websites than Jacob.

His feeling for composition is just great! Effortless; he was able to translate my taste and ideas and made it look even better than I expected. I’m super happy and proud of what came out.
